Runtime Errors
Runtime errors in AOL are errors that occur at some point during AOL’s
execution. Runtime refers to the time from which a program, in this case
AOL, is launched to the time that it is terminated. Errors that occur
during a program’s runtime are called runtime errors. As with any broad
category of computer errors, many runtime errors exist. Even within a
single application such as AOL, dozens of different runtime errors may
occur for a number of reasons.
Runtime Errors in AOL
Runtime errors in AOL can originate in the software itself. In this
case, an exception may have occurred that the software is not equipped
to handle or a bug may exist within the programming. Exceptions are
events that the software encounters. Software is programmed to respond
to triggers and events, but if an event doesn’t have associated
instructions for dealing with it, it becomes an exception. From there,
the software performs an exception handling routine where it searches
for additional programming instructions. If the programmer has included
instructions telling AOL how to deal with the exception, AOL will follow
those instructions. If not, AOL does not know what to do other than
display a runtime error message.
Bugs in AOL software can also trigger runtime errors. Software
developers test their software extensively before releasing it. However,
test environments can’t possibly account for all variables. Once new
versions of AOL are released, it’s not unusual for new bugs to be
discovered in the software as millions of users begin using AOL on
computers of all types and configurations. You may be using AOL only to
discover that a runtime error is generated every time you use a certain
device such as a webcam or scanner.
Low memory and computer viruses are also underlying causes of runtime
errors in AOL and other programs.
Solving a Runtime Error in AOL
If you are experiencing a runtime error in AOL, take a few minutes to
consider the possible causes of the error. Does the error consistently
happen when performing a specific function within the AOL software? Does
the error message give you any other clues such as “a file is missing or
corrupt”? Does the runtime error occur intermittently, especially when
your computer is running low on resources? If you can pinpoint the
cause, it’s easier to know which solution to try. The following general
steps should help with your runtime error in AOL:
·
Update AOL and your operating system. Just as developers discover new
bugs once the software is released, they also fix them and issue
updates. You should update AOL as well as Windows.
·
If AOL generates runtime errors whenever you use a certain program or
device, then update the program or device as well.
·
If you receive an AOL error that says, “Visual C++ library. Runtime
error. Abnormal program termination” you will need to uninstall AOL,
delete the files in your C:\Windows\Temp folder, empty your Recycle Bin,
and then reinstall AOL.
If the AOL runtime error seems to be related to memory issues, you may have too many programs running, a computer virus, or Spyware. Close unnecessary programs (and consider limiting startup programs in the future) and run a complete malware scan to ensure that your computer is not infected.
